Real Cookie Banner is a popular cookie consent plugin for WordPress. It shows your visitors a cookie banner and stops tracking scripts from running until they say yes.
Converly works with Real Cookie Banner, so visitors who accept marketing cookies are tracked as normal and visitors who decline aren't tracked at all. Everything below works on the free version of the plugin.
To set it up, follow the instructions below:
Installed Converly through Google Tag Manager?
Follow the Google Tag Manager guide instead. The steps below are for sites where the Converly code is pasted straight into the website.
Step 1: Add Converly as a service
Real Cookie Banner needs to know about Converly before it can block it, so the first step is to add Converly as a service.
In your WordPress admin, go to Cookies, open the Services (Cookies) tab and click Create from scratch. Fill it in like this:
- Name: Converly
- Group: Marketing
- Provider: Converly
- Purpose: Conversion tracking. Records which ad a visitor clicked and reports their form fills and bookings back to the ad platforms.
Leave the code fields empty, since your Converly code is already on your site. Then save the service.
Step 2: Add a content blocker for Converly
The next step is to tell Real Cookie Banner to hold back the Converly code. Go to Cookies, open the Content Blocker tab, click Add content blocker and choose Create from scratch. Fill it in like this:
- Name: Converly
- URLs to block:
*js.converly.io* - Connected service: Converly (the service you created in Step 1)
Then save the content blocker. This leaves your Converly code exactly where it is and simply stops it from running until the visitor accepts marketing cookies.
Step 3: Test it works
That's it! The final step is to test it, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
First, open a new incognito window (or private window) and go to your website. When the cookie banner appears, decline marketing cookies. Then submit a test entry through one of your forms.
Now open the Activity page in Converly. The test entry should NOT appear there, because Converly never ran for that visitor.
Next, close that window, open another new incognito window, and go to your website again. This time accept marketing cookies (or click accept all), then submit another test entry. Head back to the Activity page, and this time the test conversion should show up within a moment.
If both of those happen, your cookie banner is holding Converly back properly.
